CALIENT Technologies Names Expert Advisory Board, Deepening Carrier Positioning

San Jose, Calif. August 23, 2004 – CALIENT Technologies, a leading provider of carrier-class photonic switching systems, announced today an outstanding group of optical systems, carrier and technology experts to serve as a standing resource for CALIENT's leadership team, launching its new Advisory Board today.

"We have worked collaboratively with many of these luminaries one-on-one, but now we have the singular advantage of working with all of them on a standing basis," explained Charles Corbalis, CALIENT CEO and co-founder. "CALIENT's Technical Advisory Board is chartered to provide technical guidance to us on technology trends, new ideas, new applications, customer insights and feedback on products. Its members are uniquely equipped to do this, par excellence."

Dr. John Bowers, Director of the Multidisciplinary Optical Switching Technology Center at the University of California, Santa Barbara, winner of the IEEE William Streifer Award, Fellow of the IEEE, OSA and APS, and Chief Technology Officer/co-founder at CALIENT Technologies. Dr. Bowers was previously with AT&T Bell Labs, as well as co-founder and CEO of Terabit Technologies.

Dr. Dean Casey, former director of optical transport network architecture in the Verizon Technology Organization, where he led laboratory-based studies of new optical systems and developed advanced optical architectures for VerizonÕs network, including development and test of interoperability specifications for multi-vendor systems in large networks. He is now president of Ngenet Research, LLC;

Dr. Jean Jerphagnon, former advisor to the technical director at Alcatel and France Telecom, president of OpticsValley, former President of the Science and Technology Committee, SociŽtŽ Internationale des Electriciens SEE), President of the French academic federal research organization RNRT, and one of 200 select members of l'AcadŽmie des Technologies;

Dr. Peter Kaiser, optical fiber pioneer and former head of lightwave systems research at Bellcore/Telcordia, leading contributor to optical fiber and systems standards at ITU, formerly member of management of OFC and ECOC, and Co-Chair of APOC 2004 in Beijing, Life Fellow of IEEE and Fellow of OSA, Consultant in optical systems technologies and applications.

Dr. Fred Leonberger, former Senior VP and chief technology officer of JDS Uniphase. He held a similar position at Uniphase Corporation, joining after its acquisition of UTP, a company he co-founded and served as General Manager. Active in optoelectronics for over 25 years, Dr. Leonberger is Principal of EOvation Technologies LLC and a member of the National Academy of Engineering;

Dr. Noel MacDonald, pioneer in MEMS development and MEMS Architect at CALIENT Technologies. Dr. MacDonald is also engineering professor holding the Fred Kavli Chair for MEMS at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He was formerly Director of the MicroSystems Technology Office at DARPA and Director of the Cornell Nanofabrication Facility;

Dr. Andrew Yang, consultant to the Optoelectronics Industry Association (OIDA) as advisor to the Photonics Technology Access Project, DARPA/Microsystems Technology Office, National Institute for Science and Technology and Lawrence Livermore Laboratory. He is also Chair of Electro-Optics Working Group, Advisory Group on Electron Devices to the Undersecretary of Defense Acquisition, Technology and Logistics, an IEEE Fellow and co-inventor of Schottky Barrier IR detectors and cameras.
