Dr. John Bowers, CALIENT Chief Technology Officer and Co-founder, and Professor and Director of the Multidisciplinary Optical Switching Technology Center, University of California Santa Barbara; and Dr. Dan Blumenthal, CALIENT Director of Advanced Network Technologies and Co-founder, and Professor of Electrical Engineering, University of California Santa Barbara will be participating in several short courses, workshops and sessions.

What: Short Course: SC 103, Fast Reconfigurable WDM Optical Networks
This course provides an overview of fast reconfigurable WDM optical networks, optical protocols, functional building blocks and component technology. Emphasis will be placed on architectures and techniques that support reconfigurability, fast routing and optical packet switching.

This course reviews the basics concepts of optical modulators, with emphasis on electroabsorption modulators. The fundamental physics and design of modulators will be reviewed.

This session will discuss the commercial related issues to tunability and dynamic reconfiguration in optical transport networks, applications and advantages of tunability and issues related to deploying tunability. Topics include dynamic wavelength management, dynamic reconfiguration in all-optical networks, and wavelength tunability.
