Calient Networks Adds Key Team Leaders to Support Volume Shipments

San Jose, Calif., February 5, 2002 – Calient Networks, a leading provider of intelligent, photonic switching systems, announces it has recently added to its leadership team in three key functional areas, to support the company’s readiness for volume shipments and market expansion.

William Zerella was appointed to the positions of vice president of finance and administration as well as chief financial officer in November 2001. He has a 20-year track record of successfully leading both private and public companies such as Logictier, ICTV, GTECH and Anorad through profitable growth, financial systems scalability, major funding rounds and the adoption of lean cost structures.

Mr. Zerella will spearhead Calient’s joint development investment structuring, profitability management, future financing and IPO preparation activities. He replaces Terry Gibson, who has taken the CFO position at CoSine Communications. Mr. Zerella has a bachelor of science in accounting from the New York Institute of Technology, an MBA from New York University, and is a Certified Public Accountant.

In January 2002, David Arnold was appointed to the new position of senior vice president of engineering and operations for Calient’s San Jose division. He recently served as vice president of systems engineering and operations for Network Photonics. Previous to that Mr. Arnold was executive vice president of engineering for Advanced Fibre Corporation, where he guided successful delivery of AFC’s xDSL, GR-303, TR-08, ATM and IP Telephony products, and supported revenue growth from $17 million to $350 million. Mr. Arnold was also chief operating officer for Mariposa Technology before its purchase by Marconi in 2000. He will work with CTO and senior vice president John Bowers, who heads engineering and operations for the company’s Santa Barbara research team, and Greg Galvin, president of Calient Optical Components, to ensure highest quality systems and software engineering and manufacturing success.

A third appointment was Guy Powell who recently joined Calient as its managing director of EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) operations. Mr. Powell was with CIENA from 1998 to 2000, successfully driving market leadership for CIENA’s optical transport and grooming switch systems throughout Europe. He grew that company’s European carrier base from a single PTT to eight newly licensed operators and PTTs. Most recently, Mr. Powell established Quantum Bridge’s new European organization for optical access sales and support. He will assist vice president of international operations Mike Matthys and vice president of marketing Tim Dixon with European sales, marketing, channel programs, partnerships and customer field support.

“The caliber of talent that now complements our founding team is essential to support Calient’s next scale expansion,” stated Charles Corbalis, Calient CEO and president. “Bill, Dave and Guy are proven leaders in helping innovative organizations move beyond development and into large volume delivery. We are now fully staffed so we may begin this next step in expansion.”

“Calient continues to attract top performers in key technical disciplines, management leadership and operations expertise” added Charles Chi, general partner with Greylock and member of Calient Networks’ board of directors. “I have personal working exposure to these individuals’ successes, and they will add great depth to the Calient management team.”
