CALIENT Technologies and Tellabs Achieve Successful
All-optical Network Interoperability

San Jose, California, December 6, 2000 – CALIENT Technologies, an innovator of intelligent, all-photonic switching systems, today announced successful interoperability between CALIENT's DiamondWave™ photonic switch and Tellabs' TITAN® 6100 optical transport system. The announcement marks a milestone in a series of interoperability tests, which are a part of CALIENT's Optical Platform Peering Program (OP3).

"Interoperability with Tellabs' TITAN 6100 system is an early indicator that CALIENT's DiamondWave photonic switch will be a successful solution in metro applications," said Charles Corbalis, CALIENT president and CEO. "For the rapidly-growing metro carrier market, it is essential to incorporate photonic switching to enable applications like wavelength provisioning, SONET integration and optical add/drop. The combination of the DiamondWave switch and the TITAN 6100 meets the customer need for dynamic bandwidth management in a ring environment while leveraging the economic benefit that only a photonic infrastructure can provide."

CALIENT recently established the multi-vendor OP3 initiative to test its DiamondWave™ 256 switch with emerging network elements in two-layer photonic network environments. Three distinct phases of testing in various legacy, IP service, metro and long-haul applications are being implemented. Proven interoperability with top-tier players such as Tellabs helps to reinforce CALIENT's goal of promoting best-of-breed options for service providers.

"This demonstrates Tellabs' ongoing commitment to multi-vendor interoperability," said Robert Pullen, vice president and general manager for Tellabs' Optical Networking Group. "Bringing these two best-in-class products together creates a first-to-market solution for dynamic mesh optical networks."
